Volunteer Spotlight: How Janet Jennings Helps Support Families Every Week

Graphic featuring a volunteer spotlight for Janet at Babies Need Bottoms. The design has a pink and blue background with bold text reading “Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Janet.” A photo shows Janet smiling while holding a wrapped diaper bundle inside the Babies Need Bottoms warehouse. A quote on the graphic says, “I was unaware of the great need and welcomed the chance to help young mothers have the best start in raising their children.” The Babies Need Bottoms logo appears in the bottom corner.

Janet is the kind of volunteer every nonprofit dreams of having. From wrapping diaper bundles in the warehouse to picking up donations from community collection boxes, counting incoming donations, and jumping in wherever help is needed, she truly does it all. Her consistency, compassion, and willingness to serve behind the scenes help keep Babies Need Bottoms moving forward every single day. Volunteers like Janet are the reason we’re able to support so many families in our community, and we are incredibly grateful for everything she brings to this mission.

We asked Janet a few questions about her experience with volunteering at Babies Need Bottoms, and here is what she had to say:

How did you learn about Babies Need Bottoms?

As a new mother, my daughter donated to a diaper bank in Raleigh- I had never heard of diaper banks and was shocked to realize that people needed this service.  I googled diaper banks in WNC and found BNB.

Why did you decide to volunteer with Babies Need Bottoms?

Janet and Babies Need Bottoms Board Member, Andi

I was newly retired and looking for volunteer opportunities. When I inquired, I was impressed with the way the organization was run and the friendliness of everyone. Also, I was unaware of the great need and welcomed the chance to help young mothers have the best start in raising their children.

What motivates you to stay involved with Babies Need Bottoms?

The continuing need of mothers who can’t afford what they need, and the fun volunteers I get to work with! It’s also really fun to see a full shelf of diapers ready to go to where they are needed!

When you’re not volunteering, what are some of your hobbies and interests?

I love to read, do crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, and visit my adorable grandkids in the Triangle!

Do you have any advice for those interested in volunteering?

Sign up! It’s such a great organization, and the BNB staff and volunteers are all such great people to hang out with in the warehouse! You will have fun and feel like you’ve accomplished a lot in a short period of time.
Diaper need affects 1 in 2 families. When you volunteer, you’re helping to mend the holes in our community’s social fabric —stitching resilience, dignity, and care into every bundle we distribute. Volunteer shifts are available weekday mornings at our Asheville warehouse. We welcome one-time volunteers and ongoing commitments.
