Diaper Bank Reaches 2.5 Million Diapers Distributed to Families in Need

Asheville, NC

In a powerful testament to community resilience and compassion, Babies Need Bottoms Diaper Bank proudly announces the distribution of its 2,500,000th diaper to families in need. This milestone represents a significant achievement in the organization’s ongoing mission to provide essential hygiene support—especially in the wake of the devastating Hurricane Helene that struck the region nearly ten months ago.

Since the hurricane’s landfall last September, Babies Need Bottoms has worked tirelessly with local partners, volunteers, and donors to ensure that no child goes without this basic necessity. Because diapers are not covered by federal assistance programs like SNAP or WIC, this support is vital for low-income and displaced families.

“This milestone is more than a number—it’s a symbol of hope, dignity, and care for thousands of families,” said Alicia Heacock, Co-Executive Director of Babies Need Bottoms. “We are deeply grateful to our community for making this possible.”

As part of the celebration, Babies Need Bottoms Board Members recently joined friends and volunteers to assemble 100 specialized Care Kits for mothers with babies in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), as well as for the dedicated NICU nurses who care for them. Each kit contains thoughtfully selected essentials to support new moms and caregivers navigating the emotional and physical challenges of the NICU journey. The kits were delivered to Mission Children’s Hospital—the region’s only Level III NICU—offering comfort and encouragement where it’s needed most.

“We wanted to create something deeply personal,” said Erica Whyman, Chair of the Board. “These Care Kits are a small but meaningful way to remind NICU families that they’re not alone—and to show our heartfelt appreciation for the incredible nurses who care for our tiniest and most vulnerable community members.”

Thanks to a Funds for Change grant from the National Diaper Bank Network, Babies Need Bottoms will continue expanding its Care Kit program. Upcoming kits will include Preemie Baby Kits, Newborn Baby Kits, and Postpartum/Breastfeeding Kits. The organization invites the public to get involved by making a donation at www.babiesneedbottoms.org or submitting a volunteer inquiry to be notified of the next Kit Assembly event.

Newborn babies and new parents need extra special care. Supporting Babies Need Bottoms is one way to help care for our smallest community members—and the caregivers who support them.
